The Charterhouse is one of those rare London sites where the weight of suppressed prayer and seized wealth is still palpable, its stones bearing the memory of monks silenced, Tudor courtiers enthroned, and centuries of reinvention pressed into the same ground. Founded in 1371 as a Carthusian monastery, it belonged to the order of Saint Bruno, whose austere houses of prayer traced their origins to the Chartreuse Mountains of the French Prealps. Its English name derives directly from that foundation, so that ‘charterhouse’ came to denote any Carthusian house in this country. At Smithfield the order maintained one of the most important religious communities in late medieval England, until its suppression under Henry VIII in 1537. Several monks were executed for refusing to acknowledge the king’s supremacy, making the site one of the most vivid witnesses to the violent unravelling of monastic life in the Reformation.
After the dissolution, the estate was granted to Sir Edward North, who remade the cloistered complex into a Tudor mansion fit for courtly life. Surviving elements of the Great Hall and cloisters show how monastic architecture was stripped of its religious purpose yet adapted to the needs of an ambitious household. In 1611, the wealthy magnate Thomas Sutton purchased the property. Sutton’s foundation of an almshouse and school demanded new alterations and additions, creating a Jacobean layer that overlaid but did not efface the Tudor and monastic structures. What resulted was a rare palimpsest of medieval, Tudor, and early Stuart building, each phase still legible in its stone and timber.
The Charterhouse endured severe bombing during the Second World War, which destroyed large parts of the site, yet crucial elements of the sixteenth-century fabric survived — among them the Great Hall, the Great Chamber, and the Chapel. The post-war restorations stabilised what remained, preserving the layered character of the site.
