The wall oil on plaster paintings at Knole Castle

The wall oil on plaster paintings at Knole Castle, dating from around 1603, are rare and significant examples of Renaissance decoration. They are one of only two complete surviving schemes from that period in England. Painted by Paul Isaacson (1565-1655), they feature a trompe l’oeil balustrade on the outer walls. These remarkable works adorn the great staircase, constructed between 1605 and 1608, one of the first in England to be designed as a grand room in its own right.
