At thirty-five years old, Dürer arrived in the Venetian Republic in 1505, partly driven by a need to assert his status among the most powerful artistic and political circles of Renaissance Europe. It was his second and most formative visit to Venice. He lodged near the Fondaco dei Tedeschi and was welcomed by both the German colony and Venetian elite, including the Bellini workshop. His patrons for The Feast of the Rose Garlands were members of the German confraternity of the Rosary, based at the church of San Bartolomeo near the Rialto, where the painting was originally installed.

The painting is monumental and rich in political and theological resonance. At its centre, the Virgin Mary, enthroned beneath a cloth of honour, bestows rose garlands—symbols of Marian intercession, purity, and the Dominican Rosary tradition. The Christ Child, animated and gesturing, crowns the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (1459–1519), while the Virgin crowns Pope Julius II (1443–1513), thus uniting empire and papacy under the aegis of Marian devotion.

One of the most striking features of the painting is Dürer’s self-portrait, located at the far left. He appears in three-quarter view, gazing directly at the spectator, clothed in a subdued brown garment and holding a scroll bearing his signature and the claim that the work took him five months to complete. Dürer does not insert himself among saints or divine figures, but positions himself modestly at the margin, among the members of the lay confraternity. He is simultaneously present and apart: a devout participant in the ritual space and the creator who governs it. This tension between devotion and artistic self-awareness lies at the heart of Dürer’s position in early sixteenth-century culture. In Venice, where artists such as Giovanni Bellini (c. 1430–1516) were revered as civic humanists and not merely craftsmen, Dürer encountered a model of artistic authority that would influence his self-fashioning for the rest of his life.
